About Sonnen

Sonnen is a German home battery manufacturer founded in 2010. It gained popularity in Australia in 2018 after opening an assembly facility in Adelaide, positioning itself as a premium, locally made option.

However, by mid-2022, Sonnen ceased Australian assembly due to rising costs and supply chain issues and now imports all units from Germany. It remains NETCC-approved and operates an Australian office in South Australia.

Sonnen is now fully owned by Shell Overseas Investment B.V., and its batteries are eligible for all major rebate programs, including the Federal Rebate and state schemes in WA, NT, and QLD.
While it once offered the SonnenFlat program in Australia (a fixed-price electricity plan for battery owners), that service was discontinued in June 2024.

Sonnen Battery Models in Australia

Sonnen currently offers two home battery products in Australia: the sonnenBatterie Evo and the sonnenBatterie Hybrid 9.53. While both use safe LFP chemistry and come with 10-year warranties, they’re designed for different types of homes and solar setups.

🔌 sonnenBatterie Evo

🧱 sonnenBatterie Hybrid 9.53

The Evo is simpler for backup and outdoor installs, while the Hybrid offers more flexibility in system size — but comes with extra install complexity and optional add-ons.

Sonnen’s mobile app is functional but basic. It lets you:

However, the app lacks:

It’s fine for simple monitoring, but lags behind apps from Tesla, SolarEdge, and even Sungrow.

Sonnen Battery Cost in Australia (2025)

Sonnen’s home batteries are positioned as a premium product, but that comes with a noticeably higher price tag than many alternatives. Based on typical 2025 retail pricing:
Product Estimated Installed Price Usable Capacity Cost per kWh (approx.)
SonnenBatterie Evo $13,000 – $15,000 10.0 kWh $1,300 – $1,500
Sonnen Hybrid 9.53 (10 kWh) $12,000 – $14,000 9.0 kWh $1,300 – $1,550
🔍 Sonnen batteries cost 25–50% more per kWh than similarly sized systems from Sungrow or BYD — and offer fewer features in some cases (e.g. app control, discharge rates, install flexibility).

While you are getting a long warranty, many Australian Sonnen battery owners find it hard to justify the extra cost especially with the end of local manufacturing.

Rebate Eligibility

Both the sonnenBatterie Evo and Hybrid 9.53 are eligible for the Federal Battery Rebate, which offers:

This rebate alone can reduce the upfront cost of a 10 kWh Sonnen battery by approximately $3,500 — but Sonnen’s higher price still puts it above most mainstream competitors.

Ask Us Anything

The typical installed cost is $13,000–$15,000 for a 10 kWh sonnenBatterie Evo, and similar for the Hybrid 9.53 with 10 kWh usable capacity. Prices vary by installer and location.

No. While Sonnen batteries were assembled in Adelaide between 2018 and 2022, they are now fully imported from Germany.

Sonnen offers a 10-year warranty or 10,000 full cycles one of the longest in the industry. Under normal use, this translates to 10–13 years of usable life.

  • The Evo is an AC-coupled battery.
  • The Hybrid 9.53 is a DC-coupled hybrid system with an integrated inverter.

Yes, both models support grid charging, though availability depends on your energy retailer’s tariff and your system configuration.

All Sonnen batteries are covered by a 10-year or 10,000-cycle warranty, including the battery modules, inverter (if included), and power electronics.

Yes. The Sonnen Battery app allows homeowners to monitor solar production, battery status, and grid usage. However, it lacks advanced features like time-of-use optimisation or smart automation.

Sonnen batteries are not designed for full off-grid systems. Other brands (e.g. Selectronic, RedEarth, PowerPlus) are better suited to off-grid applications with higher surge output and full home backup.

It depends on your goals. Sonnen batteries offer strong warranties and safety, but Sungrow, Tesla Powerwall, and BYD offer better value, performance, or app experience for many homeowners.

What is Sonnen battery storage used for in Australia?

Sonnen battery storage in Australia is primarily used to store excess solar energy during the day for use at night or during peak tariff periods. The sonnenBatterie Evo also provides blackout protection, making it a good option for homeowners who want to keep essentials running during power outages.

Note: The Hybrid 9.53 grows taller as battery modules are added. All models are floor-standing only and require adequate space for airflow and servicing.

Final Verdict

The Sonnen Battery offers strong safety credentials, a long warranty, and clean, integrated design — but these come at a price. With local manufacturing no longer in place, Sonnen batteries in Australia are now one of the most expensive options per kilowatt-hour, and multiple installers have reported support and commissioning issues.

While the sonnenBatterie Evo does offer built-in backup and outdoor install flexibility, and the Hybrid 9.53 provides inverter integration, both models lack advanced app features and scalability found in cheaper systems like Sungrow or BYD.

For buyers who qualify for large rebates and want a European brand with a solid warranty, Sonnen’s Home Batteries may still appeal. But for most Australian households, better value and usability can be found elsewhere.
