How We Score and Compare Batteries

Every battery on our site is rated using a consistent framework that reflects real Australian conditions and buyer priorities. We assess three key areas:

Technical Performance

How well the battery performs day to day. This includes:

User Experience

How easy it is to live with the system:

Trust & Support

What happens after the sale matters too:

We only assign full scores to batteries with Clean Energy Council approval and a meaningful presence in the local market.

Note: We also review newer battery brands that meet CEC approval and show clear potential. However, we do not assign a percentage score to products that fall below our recommendation threshold. Batteries scoring below 70% overall are not included in our shortlist, as they may have support limitations or performance concerns based on available data.

How are final scores calculated?

Each battery is rated across nine key areas three under Technical Performance, three for User Experience, and three for Trust & Support. These scores are combined and weighted evenly to give a final rating out of 100. Our goal is to reflect how the battery performs in real homes, not just on paper.

Which Battery Suits Your Home?

Not every household needs a premium system, and not every entry-level battery is worth the risk. To help you make an informed decision, we’ve grouped our top-rated batteries by buyer fit.

Premium Home Batteries

Designed for homeowners who want best-in-class performance, future-ready features, and maximum backup protection. These systems typically cost more, but deliver a seamless and powerful experience.

Top picks:

Budget Home Batteries (Under Review)

There are over 100 Clean Energy Council-approved battery brands in Australia. While many appear affordable upfront, most lack proven long-term support or performance.
We are currently reviewing a range of entry-level systems and will update this section once specific models meet our minimum standards.
If you’re considering a low-cost battery, make sure it:

Not all CEC-listed batteries are equal. A cautious approach is essential when evaluating unknown or unproven brands.

Value for Money Batteries

These batteries strike the right balance between capability and cost. They’re well-supported, rebate-eligible, and offer strong real-world performance.

That depends on your goals and budget. For premium performance and whole-home backup, Tesla and Enphase lead the market. For strong value, Sungrow, GoodWe, and BYD offer excellent systems at more affordable price points.
Reliability comes down to build quality, warranty support, and proven performance over time. In 2025, Tesla, Enphase, and BYD stand out for their strong records and support networks.
In many cases, yes. A 10kWh battery can cover most evening and overnight usage for an average household, especially if paired with solar. High-energy homes may need more capacity or blackout protection.
In most cases, no. A 5kWh battery is unlikely to meet the energy needs of a typical household. It may help reduce grid use slightly, but it often runs out of charge too quickly to offer meaningful savings or backup.
In 2025, expect to pay between $8,000 and $12,000 after rebates. Premium brands may cost more, while entry-level systems can come in under $9,000 with incentives.
Most modern batteries are sized in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Look at your household energy usage, appliance loads, and backup needs. Focus on usable capacity, scalability, and inverter compatibility.
Not necessarily. CEC approval confirms safety compliance, but not long-term reliability. That’s why we only recommend batteries that meet higher standards for support, performance, and warranty.
