Why Battery Approval Matters
Who Approves Batteries in Australia?
- Reviewing technical documentation and test results from manufacturers
- Ensuring products meet performance, safety, and installation standards
- Maintaining a public list of approved batteries and inverters
Why CEC Approval Is Required for Rebates
- Rebates are only paid on compliant systems. That means your battery (and often your inverter) must appear on the CEC’s approved product list at the time of installation.
- Installers can’t claim incentives on non-approved products. Even if the battery looks similar or has the same specs, it won’t be eligible if it isn’t listed.
- Retailers and virtual power plant (VPP) operators often require approval too. Most won’t accept batteries that aren’t CEC-listed.
In short, CEC approval is the baseline. If it’s not approved, it’s not eligible — and that could mean missing out on thousands of dollars in rebates.
What Makes a Battery CEC-Approved?
- Compliance with AS/NZS 4777.2:2020 and other relevant standards for grid-connected systems
- Tested by an accredited laboratory and submitted with supporting technical documentation
- Clear product labelling and traceability, including usable capacity and equipment codes
- Installation and user manuals that meet Australian guidelines
- Outdoor or indoor rating suitable for residential use in Australia
The CEC reviews these submissions and publishes a product approval listing that includes:
- Manufacturer and model details
- Nominal and usable capacity (kWh)
- Whether the battery is approved for outdoor use
- Approval and expiry dates
Only batteries that pass this process are added to the official approved battery list and only these models are eligible for most rebate programs.

Note: This list includes selected brands from the official CEC product list. Availability may vary depending on your installer or supplier.
With so many names on the list, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Some brands are widely used across Australia, while others are newer or less proven. That’s why we’ve created independent battery reviews to help you compare your options by performance, value, warranty, and local support.
How to Check If a Battery Is Approved
If you’re considering a specific battery model, it’s easy to verify whether it’s approved by the Clean Energy Council. Here’s how:
Step 1: Visit the CEC Approved Battery List
Go to the Clean Energy Council’s approved battery storage page
Step 2: Search by Brand or Model
Use the search tool to enter the manufacturer name, model number, or series name. You can also filter by:
- Outdoor use
- Battery type (e.g. pre-assembled systems vs individual modules)
- Approval date or expiry
Step 3: Confirm Key Details
Check the following on the listing:
- Model code matches exactly (watch for small differences)
- Usable capacity (this is what rebates are based on)
- Outdoor rating if it will be installed outside
- Approval dates it must still be valid at the time of installation
If it’s not on the list, it’s not eligible for rebates and your installer may not be able to legally connect it to the grid.
Not sure where to start? Our battery reviews only feature CEC-approved models, so you won’t waste time on non-compliant options.
Not All Approved Batteries Are Equal
- Performance: Power output, efficiency, backup capability
- Warranty and support: Coverage length, cycle limits, service quality
- Smart features: Monitoring apps, VPP compatibility, ease of use
- Brand presence in Australia: Local support, installer access, reputation
