Yes, WA Battery Rebate Can Be Stacked with the Federal Rebate. Here’s How

Homeowner exploring WA battery rebate and federal rebate savings options in 2025

Introduction

If you live in Western Australia and you’re considering installing a home battery, 2025 could be the best time to act. Both the WA Government’s solar battery rebate and the new federal battery rebate are launching on 1 July 2025 creating an opportunity for eligible households to significantly cut installation costs.

The big question many homeowners are asking is:

Can I claim both the WA battery rebate and the federal rebate?

This guide will walk you through what we know so far, how the rebates work together, and what you can do to make the most of it.

Two Different Rebates. One Big Opportunity.

Western Australian households have never had access to this level of support for home batteries — and for the first time, two major rebate schemes are running side by side.

On one hand, there’s the WA Government solar battery rebate, designed to reduce upfront costs and improve grid stability. On the other, there’s the federal battery rebate, available nationwide and based on the size of the battery you install.

They’re funded separately, administered by different bodies, and have distinct eligibility requirements. But when used together, they offer a unique opportunity to make battery storage far more affordable especially for homes that already have rooftop solar.

In short: the WA battery rebate and federal solar battery rebate can work together, and understanding how they differ is the first step to maximising your savings.

How Much Could You Save by Stacking Them?

Combining the WA solar battery rebate with the federal battery rebate can unlock serious savings — especially for homes investing in mid-to-large battery systems.

Here’s what’s on offer for eligible WA homeowners:

Federal Battery Rebate

  • Advertised as $372 per usable kWh, but actual benefit is likely $330–$350 per kWh after admin and delivery fees

  • Available nationwide from 1 July 2025

  • Must be paired with rooftop solar and installed by a participating provider

WA Government Battery Rebate

  • Synergy customers: $130 per kWh, capped at $1,300

  • Horizon Power customers: $380 per kWh, capped at $3,800

  • Requires VPP participation and use of approved installer and equipment

Example Combined Savings: Federal + WA Rebate

Battery Size Federal Rebate (Est.) WA Rebate (Synergy) WA Rebate (Horizon) Total Savings (Synergy) Total Savings (Horizon)
10 kWh ~$3,300–$3,500 $1,300 (cap) $3,800 (cap) ~$4,600–$4,800 ~$7,100–$7,300
13 kWh ~$4,290–$4,550 $1,300 (cap) $3,800 (cap) ~$5,600–$5,800 ~$8,000–$8,300
20 kWh ~$6,600–$7,000 $1,300 (cap) $3,800 (cap) ~$7,900–$8,300 ~$10,400–$10,800
30 kWh ~$9,900–$10,500 $1,300 (cap) $3,800 (cap) ~$11,200–$11,800 ~$13,700–$14,300

⚠️ WA rebates are capped at 10 kWh. For batteries larger than 10 kWh, you’ll still only receive a maximum of $1,300 (Synergy) or $3,800 (Horizon Power).

Extract from Western Australia Government Website:

By 1 July 2025, the WA Government will be offering rebates for residential batteries of up to $1,300 for Synergy customers ($130 per kWh of battery capacity) and up to $3,800 for Horizon Power customers ($380 per kWh of battery capacity). With the assistance under the Federal program residents will be able to receive up to $5,000 and $7,500 respectively towards the cost of a 10kWh battery installation.

Summary:

  • Federal rebate scales with battery size, even beyond 10 kWh

  • WA rebate does not scale beyond 10 kWh, but still stacks with federal

  • Combined, these programs can reduce your battery cost by over $10,000 in some cases

Am I Eligible to Stack the Rebates?

There’s no special application to combine the WA and federal battery rebates but you do need to meet the eligibility requirements for both schemes individually.

That includes things like:

  • Using approved battery equipment

  • Installing through a registered provider

  • Participating in a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)

FAQs

Can I claim both the WA and federal battery rebates?

Yes WA households can access both rebates, as long as they meet the eligibility criteria for each program individually.

How much can I save if I stack the rebates?

Depending on your location and battery size, you could save $4,000 to $7,000 or more by combining the WA and federal rebates. Horizon Power customers may save even more.

Do I need to apply separately for each rebate?

Each rebate has its own process. The WA rebate will be managed through a state portal, and the federal rebate is applied through participating retailers. Your installer should guide you through both.

Is there a deadline to claim the WA battery rebate?

The WA scheme is expected to open from 1 July 2025, with limited funding available. It’s best to get quotes early, as demand is expected to be high.

What size battery should I install to get the maximum rebate?

The federal rebate scales with battery size, but the WA rebate is capped at 10 kWh. If your battery is 10 kWh or more, you’ll receive the full state rebate. Larger batteries still receive the full federal rebate amount (minus admin fees).

What is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), and why is it required?

A VPP allows your battery to share energy back to the grid when needed. To qualify for the WA battery rebate, your system must be able to join a VPP, such as Synergy Battery Rewards, Horizon Community Wave, or approved third-party options.

Can I get a rebate if I already installed a battery?

No, only batteries installed on or after 1 July 2025 are eligible. Installations completed before this date do not qualify for either the WA or federal rebate.

Will I get the rebate as a cash payment or discount?

Rebates are typically applied at the point of sale by your installer or system provider. You won’t need to claim them manually the total rebate is usually factored into your final quote or invoice.
