Solar Battery Rebate WA: 2026 Guide to the State and Federal Rebates
Last updated: 3 November 2026
The solar battery rebate WA households can claim is $1,300 for Synergy customers and $3,800 for Horizon Power customers, paid on top of the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate. The WA Residential Battery Scheme has been open across Western Australia since 1 July 2025, and you must join a virtual power plant (VPP) to get it.
At today’s federal rate, a 10 kWh battery attracts about $3,800 in combined rebates in Perth and the south-west, and about $6,300 in regional WA. The federal rate drops on 1 January 2027, so your install date matters. This guide covers the amounts, who qualifies, the VPP rules, the interest-free loan and how to claim.
How Much Is the Solar Battery Rebate in WA?
The WA battery rebate pays a set amount per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of usable battery storage, up to 10 kWh. Which rate applies depends on whether you are a Synergy or Horizon Power customer. Your approved vendor lodges the application for you.
Synergy customers (Perth and the south-west)
Synergy customers get $130 per usable kWh, capped at 10 kWh, so the maximum is $1,300. Any battery with 10 kWh or more of usable capacity earns the full amount. Smaller batteries earn less: a 6 kWh battery gets $780. If you are checking the solar battery rebate WA offers in Perth, this is the rate that applies.
Horizon Power customers (regional and remote WA)
Horizon Power customers get $380 per usable kWh, also capped at 10 kWh, for a maximum of $3,800. A 6 kWh battery earns $2,280. Installs in regional and remote areas often cost more, so get quotes before you assume the saving.
WA and Federal Battery Rebates Combined
You can claim the WA solar battery rebate and the federal Cheaper Home Batteries program on the same battery. The federal rebate comes as an upfront discount from your installer, who creates small-scale technology certificates (STCs) for the battery. You do not apply for it yourself. Our federal battery rebate guide covers the national rules in full.
Federal rebate rate and tiers
The federal rate is set by the number of STCs per kWh, and it steps down every six months until 2030. The values below assume $37 per STC, so your quote may differ slightly.
| Install period | STCs per kWh | Value per kWh |
|---|---|---|
| May to December 2026 | 6.8 | about $252 |
| January to June 2027 | 5.7 | about $211 |
| July to December 2027 | 5.2 | about $192 |
Only the first 14 kWh gets the full rate. From 14 to 28 kWh the rate is 60%, and from 28 to 50 kWh it is 15%. Capacity above 50 kWh earns nothing.
Worked examples
| Usable battery size | Federal rebate | WA rebate (Synergy) | Total in Synergy area | WA rebate (Horizon) | Total in Horizon area |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 kWh | $2,520 | $1,300 | $3,820 | $3,800 | $6,320 |
| 13.5 kWh | $3,400 | $1,300 | $4,700 | $3,800 | $7,200 |
| 24 kWh | $5,040 | $1,300 | $6,340 | $3,800 | $8,840 |
These are estimates for batteries installed from May to December 2026. Your installer confirms the final figures. From 1 January 2027, the same 10 kWh battery attracts about $2,110 federally, roughly $400 less.

Who Is Eligible for the WA Battery Rebate?
The WA government sets the eligibility requirements for the WA battery scheme. In short, you need to be an adult WA resident on Synergy or Horizon Power, with a compliant battery installed by an approved vendor.
Applicant
- Aged 18 or older and a WA resident
- An Australian permanent resident
- A Synergy or Horizon Power customer
- Able to pass identity verification and sign an installation agreement
- Have a reliable internet connection
Property
- A standalone home or titled unit in WA, with all necessary approvals
- Renters can apply with the landlord’s consent
- Home businesses qualify if the property is mainly residential
- Some properties are excluded, including government low-income housing and properties owned by government, telecommunications or mining and resources companies
Battery and vendor
- A new, replacement or additional eligible battery with at least 5 kWh of usable capacity; the WA rebate counts up to 10 kWh
- Battery on the Clean Energy Council approved list
- Inverter on the Synergy or Horizon Power supported solutions list
- Installed on or after 1 July 2025, to Western Power or Horizon Power connection requirements
- Bought and installed through an approved vendor from the Plenti vendor directory
You can add a battery to existing solar, but some older systems need extra equipment or reconfiguration. Ask your installer to check this at the site visit. The federal rebate is limited to one claim per electricity meter (NMI), so each property needs its own meter to claim separately.
The VPP Requirement
To get the WA rebate, your battery must join a virtual power plant. A VPP links home batteries so your retailer can draw on them at peak times to support the electricity network, and you earn participation credits in return. Our guide explains how a virtual power plant works.
You join through your retailer’s VPP product. The agreement runs for two years, and after that you can opt out at any time.
Synergy Battery Rewards
Synergy customers can join Synergy Battery Rewards, or choose another VPP product that meets the scheme’s criteria. Synergy can draw on your battery up to 30 times a year, for up to six hours each time, and may pay 70 cents per kWh exported during an event. Payments depend on how often events happen, so treat them as a bonus, not the reason to buy.
Horizon Power Community Wave
Horizon Power customers join through Horizon Power’s VPP product, known as Community Wave. Ask your vendor to confirm the current terms and payments before you sign.
WA Interest-Free Battery Loan
Households with a combined gross annual income under $210,000 can borrow $2,001 to $10,000 at zero interest. Plenti, the scheme administrator and an Australian Credit Licence holder, administers the loans.
- Repayment term of 3 to 10 years, with no early repayment fees
- Can cover a battery plus a new or upgraded inverter or solar panels installed with it
- Credit checks apply, and a capped late fee applies to missed payments
- The rebate and the loan together cannot exceed the total purchase and installation cost
The income limit applies to the loan, not the rebate. If you want the loan, Plenti contacts you after your vendor submits your application.
How to Claim the WA Battery Rebate
Claiming the solar battery rebate WA households qualify for is handled by your vendor. You do not apply to the government yourself.
- Check you meet the eligibility rules above.
- Get quotes from approved vendors in the Plenti directory, or compare up to 3 battery quotes through us.
- Choose your vendor, then a battery system and inverter on the approved lists.
- Complete identity verification and sign the installation agreement.
- Your vendor submits the WA rebate application. Your installer applies the federal discount separately.
- Join your retailer’s VPP product.
- If you want the loan, answer Plenti when it contacts you.
What a Battery Costs in WA After Rebates
Prices vary by brand, size and your switchboard. The table uses national average installed prices and the Synergy-area WA rebate for batteries installed in 2026, so treat it as a guide, not a quote. In the Horizon Power area, subtract another $2,500 (or $2,452 for the 9.6 kWh battery).
| Battery | Usable kWh | Average installed price | Federal rebate | WA rebate (Synergy) | Cost after rebates |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fox ESS | 10.2 | $8,622 | $2,566 | $1,300 | $4,756 |
| Alpha ESS | 10.1 | $10,134 | $2,541 | $1,300 | $6,293 |
| Sungrow | 9.6 | $11,127 | $2,415 | $1,248 | $7,464 |
| Tesla | 13.5 | $16,299 | $3,397 | $1,300 | $11,602 |
A typical 10 kWh battery can cut bills by $700 to $1,500 a year, depending on your usage and tariff. On that range, the $4,756 Fox ESS example pays back in roughly 3 to 7 years, before any VPP payments. A battery set up for backup can also keep key circuits running in an outage. Read our Sungrow battery review and Tesla battery review before you pick a brand.
Should You Install Now or Wait?
Install sooner if you can. Two things work against waiting.
- The federal rate falls every six months. A 10 kWh battery installed from 1 January 2027 attracts about $2,110 federally, against about $2,520 now.
- WA rebates are limited to 100,000 households. More than 35,000 had been used by late October 2026, so there is room, but the pool is not unlimited.
Allow time for quotes, a site visit and the VPP and rebate paperwork if you want a 2026 install date.
WA Battery Rebate FAQs
It runs until the 100,000 rebates are used. More than 35,000 had been claimed by late October 2026. The federal rebate also steps down every six months until 2030, so your combined rebate shrinks over time even while WA rebates remain.
Yes. They stack. The WA rebate comes through the state scheme, and the federal rebate comes as an upfront discount from your installer.
No. Your approved vendor submits the WA application and your installer applies the federal discount. If you want the interest-free loan, Plenti contacts you after your vendor lodges the application.
Yes, with the landlord’s consent. Home businesses also qualify if the property is mainly residential.
If you are after a WA solar rebate for panels, the WA scheme covers batteries, not panels. Rooftop solar still gets the federal STC discount, which comes off the system price through your installer. The WA loan can also cover new panels or an upgraded inverter installed with a battery.
You must join a VPP to get the rebate. The agreement lasts two years, and after that you can opt out at any time.
Yes, but the WA rebate stops growing at 10 kWh. The federal rebate keeps rising up to 50 kWh, at reduced rates above 14 kWh.
Is the Solar Battery Rebate in WA Worth Using?
For many WA households with rooftop solar, it is worth pricing a battery now. The solar battery rebate WA offers, combined with the federal rebate, cuts the price of a 10 kWh battery by about $3,800 in the Synergy area and about $6,300 in the Horizon Power area.
The rebate is not the whole picture. You still need a compliant battery from an approved vendor, a VPP agreement and a quote that fits your usage. The federal rate drops on 1 January 2027, so collect your quotes early, compare them side by side and confirm the VPP terms before you sign.
